The first known mentioned fact about the existence of the town of Lviv is dated back to 1256, though there is no precise date that would indicate the foundation of this city.

The Foundation of Lviv

The city itself was founded by the knyaz' (the king) Danylo Halyts'kyi in honour of his son Lev, and named it Lviv (Latin - Leopolis, German - Lemberg, Polish - Lwow). The city center of this town is situated at the Market Square (ploshcha Rynok), where all the merchandising was held (hence the name Market).

Rynok Square is enclosed by small colourful buildings which create the special atmosphere of cosiness and the peculiar relaxing feeling while enjoying beautiful and extraordinary architecture.

Interesting Fact

According to law, in the XIV century craftsmen, doctors and merchants could set up a building with only three windows on the facade: they could use the windows for shops, workshops or advertisement, therefore, authorities provided equal rights for all the businessmen.

However, the representatives of clergy and gentry could have project buildings with up to six windows on the front since there was no competition in merchant matters between them.

In 1793 four fountains were built, each situated on the corner of the square. In the middle of the fountains the architect has put the statues of characters from the ancient mythology: Neptune, Amphitrite, Diana and Adonis.
